Mining companies have been given permission to explore for shale gas in different areas of the EU.
Last night the European Commission gave the go-ahead for exploration of shale in the Urals, the Bay of Kursk, and the Burgas Basin in Bulgaria.
The licences will last for one year and must be renewed every two years.
An energy spokesperson for the EC said: “We encourage all members of the EU to give shale gas exploration the necessary attention and to conduct activities in a manner that is compatible with Europe’s sustainable development objectives.
“This includes the environmental impacts that may result from shale gas extraction and exploration.”
Environment spokesperson for the commission Renate Nalbantgabi said there would be “an intensive dialogue between the applicant, the Commission, and the member states with regard to all significant environmental aspects”.
The moves follow a rise in shale gas production in the US, which made the gas a viable source of fuel.
The commission also approved licences for two exploration wells off the North Sea coast of Scotland.
The licences for the Schiehallion area of the Moray Firth will last for one year and must be renewed every two years.
The exploratory licence for the Greenock area is for five years.
Shale gas is gas trapped in rock layers that have undergone tectonic movements or sedimentation.
The US has been investigating shale deposits for decades and saw a sharp increase in production from 2004.
Though it has little potential to provide the nations of the EU with fossil fuels, the commission approved the licence for exploratory drilling off the coast of Scotland and the other licences in the EU, in spite of the fact that shale gas is currently not used in the EU, and it is unlikely to be used in the future.
The commission will now hold talks with those who wish to explore for shale gas in the EU, including those who have applied for licences.
The EU has a target of providing 20% of its energy needs from renewable energy sources by 2020 and up to 60% by 2050.
The commission has given all EU member states the right to grant exploration licences, but it may be possible to make EU-wide decisions if member states agree, according to the commission.
