Tips for Fixing Drafty Windows

Can you get an idea of the temperature outside by holding your hand near a window? Drafty windows are a problem that makes it difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home and causes you to have to pay more for heating and cooling costs.

Older windows are more prone to being drafty, because as windows age, caulk and glazing putting can degrade, cracks form, and some windows even shrink over time.

Some of the signs to look for to spot drafty windows include:

• Glass that Fogs Up
• And the most obvious: You Feel a Draft

Extending the Life of Your Windows

If you’re not ready to replace outdated windows, there are some ways to minimize the draftiness until you’re ready for an upgrade.

Repair Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is inexpensive and easy to apply. Simply trim a piece of weatherstripping off of the roll, remove the adhesive, and attach it along the sashes.

Use a Draft Stopper

Draft stoppers are easy to find online and at some home improvement stores. Simply set them on the window sills to stop drafts from coming through. These are easy to use and can be moved any time you want.

Cover Cracks

Cracked glass is a common source of drafts, but you don’t have to replace the glass to see an improvement. Covering the cracks with clear nail polish will prevent air from passing through the cracks. If possible, apply the nail polish to the crack in the interior and exterior. If that’s not doable, applying only to one side will reduce the draft.

Use Window Film

Window film and a hair dryer are all you need to add window film to drafty windows. This isn’t a great year-round option, because you won’t be able to open the windows when the film is applied. It is, however, an excellent thing to do during the winter when you won’t be opening the windows anyway.

Reglazing

Over time, the glazing putting becomes brittle and falls off. Remove whatever is left of the old glaze and add new glazing. This is something that can be done as a very inexpensive DIY project.
